| | | Rome: Total War | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | One of the most anticipated games of 2004, Rome: Total War, continuation of the Total War series, hit the shells in September with an enormous success, surpassing the sales of Medieval and Shogun by a mile. Rome: Total War, like the other TW games, isn’t your ordinary RTS. It’s more of a “Heroes of Might and Magic” with a massive battle engine that makes battles with thousands of troops possible.
Units feature include infantry “e.g. Hastati, Auxilia, Triarii”, cavalry “e.g. Equites, Cavalry Auxilia, Roman Cavalry” animals “e.g. War Dogs, Flammable Pigs, Battle Elephants” and war machinery “e.g. Onagers, Ballistas, Scorpions”. There are two parts to the game, civilizations-like battlemap and what most gamers are playing for: battles. The battle system is excellent, you can use tactics like in no other game, distractions, flanking the enemy, circling them or just going head-on with bigger casualties but less thinking. The general plays a big part in the battles, he can raise the company’s morale by blowing his horn, or he can totally destroy it by running away or dying. The absolutely worst thing about the battles is how the reinforcements are taken into the fight. Only 10 troop battalions are allowed during the battle and reinforcements come in only when there is an open space, while the enemy is allowed to have as many troops as he wants.
Besieging settlements and cities is done on the world map. You move one of your generals on the city to bring up a menu to what to do. You can build siege equipment to get past the walls or you can bring onagers with you and blast the walls down from distance. Each nation has its own style in cities and units. Barbarian style is poor, no shirts, small huts etc., while Roman style is the complete opposite; metal armour, solid buildings.
The world map contains all the command functions. Moving your armies, building up your cities, recruiting units and micromanaging happens on it. You can play the whole game on it if you automatize the battles, but it is advised to fight them yourself because you get maximum casualties by allowing the CPU to take care of your army. You can play as 3 different Roman families; Julii, Scipii or Brutii as well as Greece and Egypt. Depending on your selection you start on different parts of the map resulting in different opponents during the game.
Technical aspects of this game are also executed as well as possible. Great graphics, touching and masculine music, war cries. I don’t know what’s in it, but every time when I hear a unit captain shout out the type of his unit I feel that they are real men fighting in a real war. Great graphics don’t come without a cost, though. On my machine most battles ran fine, but when there were more than 5000 troops in a frame, the game came to a crawl and I had no more than 0.5 FPS using maximum settings. I am amazed that my computer can handle all that action that is happening on the battlefield at all, let alone on good fps rates.
All in all Rome: Total War is a great game, definitely worth its hype and even more. If you have ever shown interest towards strategy games; get it, you won’t regret.

| | | Far Cry | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | First person adventure with potentially some the best gfx ever seen in a computer game. When running at the highest resolutions, I had to crank things down to medium/high from 'very high' which is something i've not done on any game for my rig. Depending on what kind of fps u find acceptable this may or may not be necessary but I tend to like at least 40-60fps in my games, but even on these moderate gfx settings things dropped to 15/20 in fire fights.
The setting of the game is a tropical island where u follow mission based objectives across its beaches. The physics in terms of object geometry and player models is very impressive. Once you have killed one of the many mercenaries trying stop you in your quest, you can bash their dead bodies up with your blade, knocking their head side ways and things. This all looks incredibly realistic. There's also vehicles you can use such as cars and boats, so far all seem to handly wonderfully and interact seemlessly with the environment; you can knock mercenaires flying when you run em over, drive through bushes and crash into solid trees for instance. Seems a top game to me, potential game of the year if some of the upcoming bigger 2004 titles fail to deliver.

| | | Battlefield: Vietnam | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Having spent several months being a bit of a BF1942 addict I was really looking forward to this game. I didn't buy it straight away as ut2004 was obviously more important ;p nor did i fully read any reviews, assuming it being a Battlefield game, that itd be amazingly fun! Shame. If you've played BF1942 and the popular DC mod then you'll probably be disappointed.
There are a few nice additions like the helicopters and the music soundtrack but the included maps are flat, repetitive and a little stale in compaprison the varied BF1942 ones. It's not a particularly bad game at all.. it just feels like an average BF1942 mod you'd play for half an hour before going back to DC :/ For those who didnt play BF1942 originally its worth getting however, if for nothing else than to enjoy the inevitable fruits of the BF mod making community.

| | | Max Payne 2 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Having enjoyed the first Max Payne recently again, I was eager to play the sequel to the game that patented bullet time. Like the original, the general story is told with flashbacks and cartoon style storyboards between scenes. I haven't finished it yet but thankfully the weird dream sequences walking on veins type things aren't there! but are replaced with less vivid dreamy-type ones which are pretty good if not a little pointless from what I can make out. The game is basically as linear as before but in a less 'in your face' manner; although often only one direction in which to go, finding that hidden route is sometimes rewarding and you feel you're making progress or perhaps being a bit sneaky.. you're not obviously but the illusion is there. Quite a few gimmicky improvements; some nice moves in bullet time for instance which make you feel hard as fook.. spinning around with guns pointed either way etc. The level interactivity is touching on stuff seen in hl2, like knocking barrels, buckets around and such like which is nice I think.. all the taps and toilets work too ;) The visuals are excellent, I'm running on all highest settings @ 1280x and there's no slowdown, I'd say the character models are as good to the untrained eye in this game as they are in hl2. The environments are beautifully detailed as well, a typical example being MP's Police station; every room and floor is accessible in full detailed glory including the parking lot, within these rooms there are cops everywhere, and you can interact with virtually everything from pulling the paper out of the paper machine in the toilet, to changing the channel over in the recreation room to which the other police offers will react and turn it back over whilst mumbling an insult to you. It's a game definitely worth playing, there are some hard-ish areas throughout but easily passable thanks to the quicksave function, just remember to check lots of places for pills and you'll be fine :) It's not the longest game either, a m8 of lenny's completed it in 8hrs.. I completed it in about the same time, maybe an hour or two longer. It's been the best game I've played all year, only downside is the ending, which was sad :(

| | | GTA Vice City | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Although it's been out a good while now, it's still one of the best games ever made and if you haven’t played it you're missing out on a lot. With the voices of famous actors including Ray Liotta, a supreme cinematic storyline and unique game play which is expanded and improved from GTA 3. The missions are all fun as hell and well thought out, the soundtrack amazingly good and the radio station clips hilarious, especially Fernando! I advise actually playing the game properly instead of just driving about having fun; it's a lot more fulfilling, especially when you start to build up your empire and keep a nice garage going with Ferarris and Superbikes.

| | | Conflict Desert Storm II | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The original CFD owned like nothing before. You control a team of SAS or Navy Seal operatives through a series of missions, most of which involve getting through a map and completing certain objectives such as blowing up a series of satellites. Each of the team members are a specialist in a particular area, for instance an explosives guy, a sniper, heavy weapons man etc. The missions all tie in nicely and the story is told in stages with small movie introductions before each level, there's a good one about half way through where you are being tortured then the prison you're held in gets bombed and you go into 'great escape' mode and sneak your way out whilst rescuing the other members. Great game!

| | | Halo PC | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Halo has been out since the Xbox launch a couple of years ago. The visuals and game play were somewhat groundbreaking at the time, crisp graphics, varying vehicle game play and solid multiplayer action including the rare option of playing co-operatively on a console. Halo's port to the PC is too little too late, no real worthwhile extras and they've even cut out of co-op mode. If you missed out playing it on the Xbox then it's still worth the play, the story is quite good for a game, although some of the missions do tend to be repetitive as most of the time you're basically fighting the same enemies. Being able to drive and fly makes up for it, and if you do make it to the end, the final level is just great!
